ILS – Institut für Landes- und Stadtentwicklungsforschung gGMBH

ILS is a non-profit research institute working in the field of spatial sciences. The activities of the institute cover the entire spectrum from theoretical/conceptual basic research to applied research in the fields of urban and regional development, mobility, spatial planning and governance, architecture and building. Since April 2014, the institute is a member of the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft, the umbrella organisation of 15 legally independent research institutions of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The institute has a research staff of 44 researchers (FTE), including PhD candidates. ILS has wide experience in participating in European and international research projects, both as co-ordinator and partner. ILS co-ordinated EU-Framework projects ELSES, LEDA and LINK. The Institute has been or is a partner in European Framework and H2020 projects such as FEW-Meter, FoodE, MAX, MOST, RAISE-IT, RURALIZATION, RELOCAL, SOCIAL EXCLUSION, WORKANDHOME, in INTERREG-Projects CSI, EURBANET, IMAGE, RESTORE, VALUE, VALUE ADDED as well as ESPON-Projects (COMPASS, TiPSE, PROFECY) and the Cost action “Urban Allotment Gardens”. The project will be carried out in the research group “Urban Social Space”, which has a long track record in research on social disparity, spatial fragmentation and social integration, migration and integration processes. In these policy areas, ILS also has a long tradition of carrying out practitioner-oriented research for and with a wide range of local, regional and national authorities and institutions.

ILS will lead the Work Package on Local Population. The WP comprises a conceptualisation of the term local population, an overview of studies about attitudes of local population, an empirical study of attitudes towards young migrants across all case studies, an in-depth empirical study of local non-migrant youth and an overall analysis of findings within this WP. ILS will also carry out case study research in Germany.
